Telikom connects internet facility for New Ireland school

HAVING access to quality learning materials to boost education is vital for every school in the country, and a school in New Ireland is thankful support has come their way.

Recently, Utu Secondary School a 20 minutes drive away from Kavieng town was hooked up to internet by Telikom PNG Ltd through the Telikom Foundation. This is part of Telikom’s commitment in enhancing education in New Ireland Province.

It’s a good news to start of Term 3 three on a high note as the e-learning service will be made available to more than 900 students of Utu. The children will have access to education resources on various subjects thought in schools today. Apart from the subjects Encyclopedia and Britannica including other vital sites are include to boost quality research and learning.

In addition, the teachers can equally have access to updated teaching resource that is available online to add value to students’ education.   

Deputy Principal Academic, Ms Catherine Haru commented on the importance of having internet access especially the program that will assist students a lot in research work when the school library lacks updated information.

“Utu Secondary is fortunate to have access to internet facility. With restricting social sites in this program is a bonus for our students. We thank Telikom for choosing and giving us this service to boost our students’ performance and teachers be more equipped to teach its students,” Ms Haru said.

Telikom’s Regional Business Manager for New Guinea Islands, Mr Voda Vilik formally handed over the internet facility to the school. He urged the teachers to assist students with their research work in using the internet facility.

“The service provide by Telikom must not be abused and teachers must guide their students in using the facility. Telikom is committed in providing the same service to other schools in New Ireland and the New Guinea Islands region in the future.”

Five schools in New Ireland Province have already shown interest in the same service as Telikom continues to connect internet services to schools and other institutions with its affordable internet rate.
